Soil - Three Things You Never Knew

Soil is an essential part of all life on Earth; however, its importance is often outweighed by human ignorance of it. Soil is such a special resource that without it, the lives of all living organisms would be under-threat. So we thought we'd provide you with some interesting soil facts - here are three things you probably never knew about soil:

1.

The amount of soil that is accessible due to terrain on which the world’s human population is able to make use of for growing food amounts to only 10% of the world’s surface. And of course, we’re unable to use all of that soil because we like to build on much of it. All in all, there is a very small precious amount of land which we must look after if we’re to reap the benefits of its soil.

2.

It takes approximately 500 years for 1 inch of soil to accumulate. So, the next time you turn your soil or wipe the soil off your newly pulled carrots, take a good long look at the soil you see. It may have been starting to form around the time that Henry VIII was on the English throne – although we’re not sure if that makes your carrots ‘Tudor Carrots’.

3.

For those who are extra keen on soil, it may be worth taking a trip to the USA, where it’s possible to begin a career in soil judging. This is a common activity in which judges across the many states assess various soils at specific soil judging competitions where contestants decide colour, texture, consistency and soil structure. The winner is obviously that judged to be closest to the exact soil property based on scientific experiment.
