The Importance Of World Soil Day On 5th December
We celebrate all sorts of landmark days in the calendar, from Mothers Day to non-smoking day, but you might be surprised to learn that there is an official day dedicated just to ‘soil’. Yes, that’s right, on 5th December each year, people around the world celebrate World Soil Day, so let’s see what that means for you and how you can participate.
It was in 2002 that the International Union of Soil Sciences coined World Soil Day, a day to reflect on the importance of soil and raise awareness of what might happen if we do not sustain it properly. As a vital human and animal resource, without soil we would be pretty stuck. Our future would basically be bleak. Still, soil is relatively undervalued in terms of future considerations and it isn’t until people tell you about its importance that you start to realise where we might be without it. The harsh reality is that we probably wouldn’t even be here.
Soil helps to grow our food and keep our animals live. Creatures live in the soil and help to keep it healthy, which in turn benefits plants and other vegetation we plant on the land. In addition to this, soil is vital to keeping our forests in existence, as good soil nutrition ensures forests absorb more carbon which in turn makes the environment much healthier for all of us. Soil really is at the heart of everything and World Soil Day aims to reiterate this and show people how important it is that we continue to maintain our soil levels and keep the ground around us healthy for both humans and animals.
Of course, soil is not without its threats and we need to be careful that we do not overlook its importance as other modern methods come to the forefront. Soil has been in existence for thousands of years and it would be a shame if we neglected it at this stage.
