The electrical conductivity value is a general measure of the soluble salt content or salinity of a soil. High electrical conductivity values are associated with soils that contain high levels of soluble salts (soluble nutrients or otherwise). Excess soluble salts can adversely affect plant life by changing a plant’s water balance and basic function, resulting in wilting or scorching. A good quality topsoil should have an electrical conductivity value within the range of 100-1500uS/cm (soil : water extract).
